Doctor Who was first transmitted (in black and white) by the BBC on 23 November 1963 and originally featured William Hartnell as The Doctor.
Hartnell was replaced in the central role on 5 November 1966 by Patrick Troughton, who continued until the end of the 1960's.
The first episode of the 1970's, transmitted on 3 January 1970, not only saw Jon Pertwee as The Doctor but was also the first to be transmitted in colour.
Jon was succeeded by Tom Baker on 28 December 1974, who stayed with the role right through until Peter Davison took over on 4 January 1982.
Yet another change of leading actor took place on 22 March 1984 as Colin Baker became the show's central character.
Colin's tenure as The Doctor was interupted by the BBC putting the show on hold on 30 March 1985, but he did return to the role upon it's reintroduction on 6 September 1986, only to be replaced by Sylvester McCoy on 7 September 1987.
The episode shown on 6 December 1989 turned out to be the last until 27 May 1996, when a BBC-Worldwide/Universal co-production TV-Movie was made starring Paul McGann as The Doctor.
